Beginner's guide

Sword x Staff for new players — the core loop (class, skills, gear, pet), honest first steps, and where to go next.

5 min read
The short version

You play one character. You power it up four ways: a class (your combat job, 18 of them on a 5-rank tree), skills pulled from the Goddess Prayer, gear across 5 slots, and a pet in your corner. Learn that loop, follow the story to unlock everything, then read the system guides below for the details.

The core loop

One character, four power systems

Unlike a hero-collector, you don't build a roster — you build yourself. Everything else (classes, skills, gear, pets) is a layer of power on that single character. These four systems are the whole game.

01

Pick a class

Your character grows along one combat job. There are 18 classes on a 5-rank tree branching from 2 roots — Warrior and Mage.

02

Pull skills

Power comes from skills you pull on the Goddess Prayer — 13 banners in all. The Skill Prayer's Legendary rate is 2.41%.

03

Equip gear

Fill all 5 equipment slots and upgrade toward higher rarities — the ladder runs across 6 tiers.

04

Bring a pet

Add one companion to the fight. 14 pets cover 3 roles — damage, tanking and support.

The loop: pick a classpull skills for it → gear upadd a pet → fight harder content → earn more to repeat. Each lap makes the next one possible.

First steps

What to do as a new player

General orientation, not a tier list. The exact “best” class, skill or pet shifts with live balance and your content — so this sticks to the moves that hold up regardless.

  1. Follow the main story first

The campaign is what unlocks each system — the Prayer, pets, gear upgrading and side modes open up as you progress. Push the story before chasing anything else.

  2. Level your starting class to its first promotion

You begin as a Warrior or Mage. Get that base class to its promotion level so you can pick a Rank-2 lineage — that choice sets the combat role you climb all the way to the 5th rank.

  3. Spend your standard Prayer currency

Pull on the everyday Prayer banners with your standard currency rather than hoarding it — early skills and companions are a bigger power jump than holding resources. Save premium currency for banners you actually want.

  4. Keep every gear slot filled

Empty slots are free stats left on the table. Equip something in all 5 slots and upgrade the pieces you use; replace and re-roll as better rarities come in.

  5. Bring a pet that covers a gap

Match your companion's role to what your build is missing — extra damage, survivability or utility — rather than always defaulting to the same one.

Where to go next

Dig into each system

Each system has its own deep-dive guide with the full detail, verified against the game's own values — rosters, exact rates and progression gates.

Sources & caveats

Every count on this page is verified against the game's own values — the class data (18 classes), the banner and pity data (13 banners, 2.41% Skill Prayer Legendary), the pet data (14 pets), and the equipment data (5slots). This is an orientation guide to the game's systems and facts; what is actually “best” depends on your account, your content and live balance these values can't capture — treat strategy as gameplay-dependent, not a fixed meta.
